I want to preface this by saying not everyone has to be as 'extra' as me and so I don't expect you to do all of these points, but even if you can include a few it should hopefully help your skin.
Air travel can be particularly harsh on your skin due to the low humidity and confined space. Here are my top tips to ensure your skin stays healthy and glowing throughout your flight and beyond.
1. Wear Minimal Makeup
Keeping makeup to a minimum allows your skin to breathe better in the dry cabin air. Heavy makeup can clog pores and lead to breakouts. Instead, opt for a lightweight tinted moisturiser or just your bare skin. I love the Nimue SPF 40 tinted (a client favourite in my clinic) and also the Revision Intellishade® TruPhysical SPF 45. The Revision Intellishade is a 5-in-1 product! This makes it great for travelling. It hydrates the skin and help plump fine lines and wrinkles, it can repair the skin's barrier, it has a high antioxidant protection, provides a mineral SPF of 45 and is also tinted to match the natural shade of your skin.
2. Drink Lots of Water
Staying hydrated is crucial. The air in planes is notoriously dry, and drinking plenty of water helps to keep your skin hydrated from the inside out. Aim to drink a glass of water every hour during the flight.
3. Use Gua Sha or Gold Globe Massager
Using my fluorite Gua Sha or Gold Globe Massager on the plane can help with lymphatic drainage and puffiness. Gently massage your face to stimulate circulation and reduce swelling.
4. Wear a Sheet Mask
If you’re comfortable, wear a sheet mask like my Meder Hydra-Fill Beauty Sheet Mask during the flight. This can provide intense hydration and replenish your skin's moisture levels. It’s a perfect way to pamper your skin mid-flight.
5. Apply an Antioxidant Serum
Use an antioxidant serum such as SkinBetter Alto Advanced or my Vitamin C Face Serum. These serums help to prevent free radical damage caused by the plane’s recycled air and high altitude. The Revision Intellishade has this built in too.
6. Wear SPF
Don’t forget to wear your SPF on the plane as UV rays can penetrate through the windows. A broad-spectrum sunscreen will protect your skin from harmful rays. Remember, sun protection is essential even at 30,000 feet! Maybe try my all time best selling SPF if you haven't already, The Nimue Sun-C SPF 40.
7. Use Hydrinity Hyacyn Mist Spray
Bring along your Hydrinity Hyacyn Mist Spray. This can prevent bacteria on your skin and can also be used to spray your seat and hands for added hygiene. It’s a fantastic multi-purpose product that keeps your skin and environment clean. I couldn't live without this now.
8. Keep Your Lips Hydrated
Cabin air can dry out your lips, so make sure to keep them moisturised with the Forlle'd Protective Cream For Lips. Apply it regularly throughout the flight to prevent chapping and maintain soft, hydrated lips.
9. Eat Hydrating Foods
Avoid plane food, which is often high in salt and preservatives. Instead, pack hydrating vegetables and fruits like cucumber and watermelon. These will help to keep your skin hydrated and nourished.
10. Take Your Vitamins
Ensure you take your vitamins, such as Skinade Travel Sachets or Altrient-C, to keep your immunity up and your skin glowing. These can provide essential nutrients that might be lacking in your in-flight diet.
11. Cleanse and Shower Upon Arrival
As soon as you arrive at your destination, cleanse your face to remove any impurities and refresh your skin. If possible, take a shower to feel completely rejuvenated after a long flight. I love to take both the Papaya Enzyme Cleanser from Revision as it's available in a 100ml travel size and keeps the skin glowing and my Cleansing Beauty Balm. My Cleansing Beauty Balm is great to help with sunburn as well due to the soothing essential oils in it. Simply massage onto skin that has had a little too much sun to calm down the burn.
12. Go for a Lymphatic Drainage Massage
Book a lymphatic drainage full body massage to get the lymph flowing and reduce swelling. This is especially beneficial after a long flight to help your body recover and feel less sluggish. I like to try and have one before I fly too if I can.
13. Exercise Upon Landing
Go for a walk, run, or visit the gym as soon as you land. Exercise helps to get your blood circulation moving and can also aid in combating jet lag, making you feel more energised and refreshed.
14. Avoid Alcohol and Caffeine
Both can dehydrate your skin, so it’s best to stick to water or herbal teas. Staying hydrated is key to maintaining your skin's moisture levels during the flight.
15. Use a Humidifier
If you frequently fly long-haul, consider investing in a portable humidifier to maintain moisture in your skin. This can make a significant difference in preventing dry skin.
16. Moisturise Regularly
Keep your skin hydrated throughout the flight to keep your skin barrier intact. Regular moisturising can help counteract the dry cabin air. I like to mist my face with the Hydrinity Hyacyn mist if I don't want to apply a face oil or moisturiser during the flight.
I hope these little tips can help your skin health when on board. Safe travels everyone!
