Sheet Masks vs. Clay Masks - Which Is Right For You?

I love a mask, like LOVE a face mask. So much so, I try and do one at least once a week (if not twice) plus a hair mask too (but that's a story for another day!)

So with the party season fast approaching and colder weather setting in, there's no better time to give your skin some extra TLC. Face masks are a fantastic way to target specific skin concerns, whether you want to hydrate, purify, or rejuvenate your complexion. But with so many types to choose from, it can be hard to know which one is right for you. Today, I thought I would talk through face masks, focusing on the differences between sheet masks and clay/cream masks— and how each can benefit your skin.

Plus, I thought I'd share my favourite masks available in the clinic to help you glow through the winter season. Whether you’re a sheet mask devotee or a clay mask enthusiast, I’ve got something perfect for every skin type and concern. Read on to find your ideal mask match!

Why Choose a Sheet Mask?

Sheet masks are lightweight, convenient, and designed to deliver a powerful dose of hydration and nutrients to the skin. They are soaked in a potent serum filled with active ingredients, making them perfect for an instant skin boost. Sheet masks are often my go-to for hydration, calming, and rejuvenating benefits, and they can be a fantastic pick-me-up before special occasions or after a stressful day. The ones I've listed below are all available to purchase and are also all medical grade products.

Top Sheet Mask Picks:

Meder RED-APAX Beauty Mask

  • Key Ingredients: Japanese sake, marigold, chamomile, centella asiatica, panthenol

  • Benefits: If you have sensitive, damaged, or irritated skin, this is the ultimate soothing mask. It’s designed to instantly reduce redness and discomfort, making it ideal for anyone experiencing sensitivity or post-treatment recovery. It even helps relieve hot flashes and calms irritation, so your skin feels balanced and comfortable.

Meder MYO-FIX Beauty Mask

Benefits: This mask works wonders for reducing fine lines and giving your skin a radiant, serene look. Perfect before a big meeting, interview, or photoshoot, the Myo-Fix Mask is like a mini Botox in a mask — it relaxes expression lines and rejuvenates the skin for a more youthful appearance.

Meder LIPO-OVAL Beauty Mask

Key Ingredients: Caffeine, arginine, wild yam, pullulan

Benefits: Need a Monday morning pick-me-up? The Lipo-Oval Mask helps reduce puffiness, tones the face, and gives you that fresh, rested look. Ideal after a weekend of indulgence, this mask will help you look more awake and refreshed in minutes.

Meder EU-SEB Beauty Mask

Perfect for keeping oily skin under control while soothing any inflammation. (One of my absolute favourite masks ever by the way! This before the week you're due on can help keep those pesky breakouts away).

Meder Arma Lift Beauty Mask

Key Ingredients: EGF, alpha-arbutin, sodium hyaluronate, vitamin E

Benefits: For mature skin, the Arma-Lift Mask is a game-changer. It firms, restores elasticity, and provides a strong lifting effect. It’s also excellent for reducing pigmentation and dark circles, making it a powerful anti-aging treatment in a sheet.

Forlle'd Lift Face Mask

Key Benefits: Immediate lifting and firming, hydration, and reduction of fine and deep wrinkles. This high-performance mask is perfect for post-treatment skin recovery and provides comprehensive anti-aging benefits, and is suitable for all skin types.

Why Choose a Clay or Cream Mask?

Clay and cream masks work deeper within the skin and are usually left on for a longer time to draw out impurities, absorb excess oil, and detoxify. They’re fantastic for refining the skin’s texture, unclogging pores, and promoting a balanced, smooth complexion. These masks tend to work well for more intensive treatments and are perfect for a Sunday self-care ritual when you want to fully indulge your skin.

So, Which Mask Should You Choose?

Whether you need a sheet mask for a quick hydrating boost or a clay/cream mask for a deep cleanse, both have their place in a balanced skincare routine. Sheet masks are perfect for on-the-go hydration and instant radiance, while clay and cream masks work deeper within the skin, providing detoxification and lasting benefits. For the best results, I recommend incorporating both types into your weekly routine, based on your skin’s needs and how it feels on any given day. However, sheet masks are brilliant, especially before a big event as I feel like they really help plump the skin out and give you a lovely glow. They are still 'treatment' based, but generally leave your skin super radiant.

Clay masks are great if you've been wearing a lot of makeup or your skin feels particularly 'clogged' up. Maybe you've been to a lot of events or have been experiencing a change in your oil production perhaps? Combining both into your skincare routine is ideal. Don't forget, you can pop a mask on your face and carry on pottering about, you don't have to stop what you're doing (unless you want to of course!) I think sometimes we think that we don't have the time to do masks, but it's not really the case. If you're watching TV, put a mask on. Doing laundry? Working from home? etc. Maybe just don't go wandering the streets, unless you want some funny looks!
